Wake Up, Leader!

I woke up this morning to multiple alarms going off at once!  Even though it was loud and obnoxious, it's been a busy week and I needed all the help I could get.  And, when it comes to leadership, getting awake and staying that way for the ones we lead is...OK...really important.
We talk about our nation and even churches needing a spiritual awakening.  But, there is one awakening that is far greater than a national and ecumenical turning to God.
The biblically-recorded relationship between Moses and Joshua is profoundly interesting but not unique.  Exodus 33 gives the narrative of the spiritual leader Moses going to the tent of meeting to inquire of the Lord, “face to face, as a man speaks with his friend.”  Joshua, the young follower and apprentice, would experience this awesome dialogue.  “Then Moses would return to the camp, but his young aide Joshua son of Nun did not leave the tent” (Exodus 33:11).  The challenge of spiritual leaders rests in this story.
Here’s the point: those in spiritual leadership are key to bringing about a righteous call to holy focus and purposeful living.  So, when leaders are awake, vision is clearer and selfless.  Here are some other primary reasons why spiritual leaders need to wake up:
Everything does rise and fall on leadership.  Spiritual sensitivity comes and goes with those who lead.
Spiritual leadership is about moving people onto God’s agenda and assignment for their lives.  Leading people in church life and spiritual growth is holy, serious and critical!
Spiritual leadership isn’t spiritual unless God is leading the leader.  Spiritual leadership is defined by God’s leading, not man’s idea or interpretation.
Fresh vision is the one component spiritual leaders are in need of to keep God’s people moving in the right direction.  Vision is fresh or stale in direct proportion to the spiritual temperature of leaders.
May we as spiritual leaders reflect a God-hunger that instills a greater holy longing in the heart of those that follow.  Yes, let's be spiritually awake for ourselves and those we lead...for God's honor!

What areas of your life need to be spiritually awakened today?
