If we can’t be honest, something’s in trouble. Seriously…! But, what I find many times is that the environment is just not conducive for it. Anymore, we live in a politically correct-driven world. And, I don’t mind that to a certain degree. Being respectful of others is not just important but necessary for legitimately building relationships. But respecting others to the point of being fearful if you’re not is unhealthy at so many levels. Effective organizations are never sustainable if they are built on fear. Robust environments are created by respectful truth-telling. Yes, the truth can be painful, but when received in a big picture perspective, honest evaluation can take you higher! And, when we tell the truth in a respectful way, we are keeping in mind to whom we are speaking and who we are in the process. Honesty may be brutal, but the way we tell it doesn’t have to be. Leaders who “never turn a blind eye” encourage such atmospheres by asking the hard questions from their team and returning the favor. Followers need to always be ready to answer honestly and not just give the leader what he/she wants to hear. We never have to be threatened by the truth when we practice respectful honesty.
What needs to be said that hasn’t and how can you be respectfully honest about it?
