The Very Essence of Leadership

The whole idea of leading is serving the mission of connecting people to the future.  There’s so much there, and I’m certainly not making an attempt to “boil it down.”  Moving forward means many things when it comes to the spiritual, the relational, the organizational; but, if there isn’t help in making the connection, a critical role has failed.  Bill Hybels crystallized it when he said, “South.  It’s the leader’s first instinct.”  We must never forget that organizations aren’t led forward; people are.  And, when those we lead are led with that in mind, organizations move forward.  If we ever get the notion that leadership is about having a position, we will defeat the purpose and bruise needed opportunities to build trust.  Leaders must be ahead in planning and present for relationships.  Leadership is the essential bridge for people between the present and the future.  So, in leading people, passion for those we lead and patience for the process are necessary ingredients.  Leave the essence of management to someone else, but never forget that the very essence of leading is PEOPLE!

Who needs our leadership to make a necessary connection to the preferred future?
