A memorable experience in pastoring came in my first church while making a home visit to an elderly parishioner. As I left, this dear saint said to me while grabbing my elbow, "Next time you come, don't forget to bring me community." I knew what she meant, and it made me chuckle inside. (I periodically served communion to some of our homebound members.) But, after reflecting on those words, the revelation came: that's precisely what it is and profoundly what she needed.
Charles Spurgeon said, “The social element is the genius of Christianity.” There are so many different methods to cultivating a sense of acceptance and belonging in church life. Small group ministry is only a model. Community, however, is a biblical principle that must not be compromised.
So, whether it's in a home, a coffeehouse, or classroom, work hard to encourage a growing bond between fellow believers. Don't get bogged down with the best or fanciest method. Leave that to the experts. Rather, lean heavy into every opportunity to spend quality time with other followers of Christ. Do more than just go to church; be the Church that values community.
