Keep the Tape Measure Handy

Things I really enjoy doing:
- working in the yard
- painting a room
- cleaning the garage
- organizing a closet
I know, for many it probably sounds crazy...and, I'm usually not for hire..., but I like the projects that show immediate results; the before and after.  It's personally important to me and thus gratifying to see the measurables.  I can get a buzz off of walking outside and into the street about an hour after I have mowed and edged the yard only to admire my work.  Beyond personalities like mine, I frankly think every organization needs "measurables" to succeed.  For those in church work, the ministry is especially difficult to measure.  So, whether you are a part of a non-profit or an established structure of the organized corporate world, embrace the need for results.  The first step is to identify what can and then what should be measured in the organization.  Communicate it at different levels but to be understood by all.  Visit it regularly.  Expect to excel toward those results.  Measure progress against it.  Celebrate any forward steps.  In other words, keep the tape measure handy…  And, enjoy more than accidental success.
