This morning in my Bible reading time, I was led to the passage of Scripture in Luke 8 - the healing of Jairus' daughter. I was struck again by such insight into this life of faith God has called all of us to. It reads, "...a man named Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue, came and fell at Jesus' feet, pleading with him to come to his house because his only daughter, a girl of about twelve, was dying." The story goes that as Jesus was on His way to this man's house, another incident occurred with a woman who needed healing as well. Scripture says that she reached out and touched the edge of his cloak and immediately she was healed. While Jesus was speaking to this woman, the story continues, "...someone came from the house of Jairus... 'Your daughter is dead," he said. 'Don't bother the teacher any more.' Hearing this, Jesus said to Jairus, 'Don't be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed.' When he arrived at the house of Jairus, he did not let anyone go in with him except Peter, John and James, and the child's father and mother. Meanwhile, all the people were wailing and mourning for her. 'Stop wailing,' Jesus said. 'She is not dead but asleep.'" The story ends with Jesus speaking to the child and her spirit returning into her body and at once she was found standing up alive and well.
This is what came to me today when reading this story... Though it was the custom to have "professional mourners" at such a scene, Jesus said in essence that no matter what the situation, faith must work in every culture and custom. So, we see this father and mother believing and Jesus' closest followers (Peter, James and John) with the faith to believe for miracles...and they were asked to join Him as He entered where the girl was. That scene right there never ceases to be most insightful to me. It helps when I just see it simple: for me, either we believe or not. Jesus was called in on the premise of a father's faith. I know this isn't the most profound thought in the world...but I want to go in with Jesus! I want to be one who Jesus calls in with him. And, furthermore, I don't want to go anywhere without Jesus going in with me. Nothing is impossible with God and with those who believe. This is my prayer today. May it be yours as well: Lord, may I be the father and follower to believe You for what Your Word says You can do and will do!" I'm goin' in with Jesus!
