How often do you compare yourself with others? OK…I can answer that for myself: too often! And, I have to be reminded how unhealthy that is on many levels. I also put unrealistic expectations on myself, feel a need to perform, an urgency to produce, and a temptation to compromise my own uniqueness. I’m wearing me out! These are tendencies that lead to traps. So, I say to you and me – DON’T GO THERE! But, we will as we have in the past. The first step to doing better in any field is to recognize wrong propensities and paths. If we are going to improve, we've got to stop doing what's keeping us back…more often. The more we catch ourselves going down these treacherous roads, the more we can address what it is we are doing, how we got there, and why it’s critical to choose a better direction. So, take down the ladder and unplug the treadmill long enough to consider your direction and your reasons for going there. Christ said, "Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly" (Matthew 11:28-30, the Message).
