Reaching Men...In an Event that Speaks Their Language

Archery, camouflage, wild game food, rockin’ music, and lots of hunting and fishing giveaways made up for an experience in creative church outreach. There was even a huge bass tank with a fishing demonstration from a professional. Also, a falcon trainer was invited with a live falcon. It was one of the coolest men’s events I’ve ever attended. Lawton First Assembly’s men’s ministry (M.O.B – Men of the Bible) put on their annual “Wild Game Dinner” - open only to guys! OK, let me say what it wasn’t: It wasn’t preachy, stiff or slow. Rather, it was energetic, illustrative, to the point and unapologetic in presenting the gospel truth. And, the evening closed with a high-dollar rifle giveaway. It was a true celebration of “guyness.” I was invited to meet the men and say a few words. My comments were bold, but true: “There’s really no ministry more important in the local church than men’s ministry.” I stand by those words primary because of what the statistics show. If dad can be reached, over 90 percent of the time the entire family will be reached. Applause to the M.O.B for tapping into something BIG!
